An Overview of the Benefits of Video Encoding Processor Cards
Do More with Less
Traditional server hardware is not well suited to video processing, especially when multiple high-resolution channels require manipulation. Using offload acceleration allows a server to do more of what it is good at, and significantly reduces power, cost and footprint of high density solutions.
Advantech products can provide the acceleration required to support video processing across a range of applications from high-density Over-the-Top (OTT) video transcoding to UltraHD HEVC encoding for broadcast.
Standards Watch
The High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC or H.265) standard was ratified in 2013 and is now becoming established.
HEVC can be used either to reduce the bitrate for a given resolution and quality, or increase the frame size and rate within a given bitrate. Hence it is used to support both mobile video and UltraHD broadcast applications.
Real-Time UHD/HD Encoder, Decoder & Transcoder PCIe Accelerator Cards
Advantech's VEGA-3300 Series of ultra-low power media processing cards enable real-time HEVC processing at up to 20x less power consumption than a software-only solution. The new HEVC standard can bring many benefits to the media industry, reducing bit rates by 50% in average when compared to an equivalent quality stream encoded using AVC, but these improvements are achieved at the penalty of much higher computation complexity, with up to 48 server-class cores required to perform 1-ch 4Kp60 software-based HEVC broadcast encoding in real time.
Advantech VEGA 3300 Series of compact plug-in media accelerators provides OEMs with the technology to accelerate the heavy-lifting part of the workflow without otherwise losing capacity or adding more servers, thereby helping them successfully address the challenge of 4K/8K UHD video processing in a cost-effective manner. These low power add-on PCIe cards can deliver unrivaled video processing capability to IT-based infrastructure platforms, allowing servers to do more of what they are good at, and significantly reducing power, cost and footprint of high-density solutions.
The VEGA-3300 Series comes with a user-space Linux or Windows SDK package supported by Advantech software engineering team that features a RESTful API and includes an FFmpeg plug-in to streamline new product development and the integration into existing applications.
